Why a site redesign can worsen your digital readability

A redesign can improve a site's appearance and still degrade its ability to be understood, connected and correctly reused.

A site redesign often starts from a sound intention. The site is old, the design is tiring, conversions are stagnating, the navigation feels dated, some pages no longer match the current offer. In many organizations, the redesign is therefore seen as a logical refresh. The goal is something cleaner, more modern, more coherent.

The problem is that a redesign can very well improve a site’s appearance while degrading its digital readability.

This degradation is not always immediately visible, and that is what makes the symptom “our redesign improved nothing” so frequent. It does not show up in the colour palette, the quality of the mockups or the fluidity of the interactions. It shows up later, when the new site:

  • speaks more vaguely than before;
  • has lost useful proof;
  • has simplified critical pages to the point of draining their substance;
  • has broken relationships between content pieces;
  • has replaced an imperfect architecture with one that is prettier but less interpretable.

The false sense of progress

Many redesigns are judged at launch. The team sees a fresh interface, better-aligned blocks, more contemporary typography, more elegant cards, a more pleasant CMS. All of that can be true. But this judgement rests on a very narrow criterion: the immediate perception of the interface.

Yet the quality of a digital asset is not reducible to appearance. A site must also:

  • enable a quick reading of the offer;
  • properly organize levels of proof;
  • connect its pillar pages to its supporting content;
  • stabilize understanding of the brand;
  • help different types of readers, both human and machine, reconstruct the right structure.

A redesign that ignores these dimensions can improve the site visually and impoverish it structurally.

The four most common ways to break readability

1. Simplifying the offer until it becomes generic

In a redesign, teams often seek to “clarify.” The problem begins when clarifying becomes synonymous with flattening.

Pages that discussed concrete issues become slogans. Useful distinctions between services, contexts or mandate types disappear in favour of a smoother layer of wording. Details are removed on the grounds that they are too technical. Result: the site is easier to browse but much harder to understand correctly.

2. Removing proof to lighten pages

Another frequent error is stripping out elements that seemed “too heavy”:

  • concrete examples;
  • trajectories;
  • screenshots;
  • tables;
  • deliverable explanations;
  • links to in-depth resources.

In theory, lightening a page can be beneficial. But if you lighten by removing substance rather than improving hierarchy, you create a site that is visually more fluid and intellectually poorer.

3. Breaking the corpus

A redesign does not only touch the visible pages. It also touches the relationships between pages. When URLs change, sections are merged without strategy, some in-depth content is discarded or documentation is separated from the rest without strong articulation, the corpus loses its coherence.

A site is not a collection of independent pages. It is a system of relationships. A redesign that only addresses the screens can degrade that system.

4. Starting with design instead of starting with reading

This is probably the most structurally damaging error. If the redesign begins with mockups, blocks and aesthetic choices, it risks freezing an architecture that has not yet been properly thought through.

The right question is not: “what should the site look like?” The right question is: what reading should it make possible?

Why this problem is more serious in 2026

For a long time, a site could compensate for its structural weaknesses with a bit of traffic, a good relational reputation or a few search positions. That is no longer enough.

Today, intermediate reading layers summarize, compare, cite, reformulate and reorganize what they find. This means a redesign can affect not only the immediate human perception, but also the quality of the synthesis a system produces from your public surfaces.

A site that is oversimplified, poorly connected or too thin on proof can remain “attractive” and yet become less useful to these external readers.

What a healthier redesign looks like

A healthy redesign does not start with design. It starts with a digital readability diagnostic. The machine-first approach then rebuilds from the comprehension structure rather than the visual wrapping.

It seeks to understand:

  • which pages truly carry value;
  • which distinctions must be preserved;
  • which proof must surface;
  • which content relationships are critical;
  • which surfaces should become canonical;
  • which pages should convert, explain, demonstrate or document.

Design comes afterward. It does not serve to mask a structural weakness. It serves to make that structure more readable.

Questions to ask before any redesign

Before launching a project, an organization should be able to answer these questions clearly:

  1. Which pages carry the public truth of our offer?
  2. Which proof must be visible in the main user journey?
  3. Which content must be connected to those pages, not set aside?
  4. What does an external system understand about us today, and what does it get wrong?
  5. Which simplifications would improve reading, and which would destroy it?

If nobody can answer these questions, the redesign may be premature.

Our role in this type of situation

The point is not to prevent redesigns. The point is to prevent a redesign from becoming a net loss of readability.

The diagnostic serves precisely to separate:

  • what belongs to the wrapping;
  • what belongs to the architecture;
  • what belongs to the corpus;
  • what belongs to the proof;
  • what belongs to reading governance.

This then makes it possible to redo a site without breaking what must remain intelligible.

A redesign is not automatically an improvement. It is a moment of risk. It can clarify or erase. It can strengthen or impoverish. It can consolidate your corpus or fragment it further.

The real issue is therefore not whether you should redo the site. The real issue is knowing what must be protected, what must be restructured and what must finally be made readable before redesigning the facade.

When an organization addresses this question upstream, the redesign becomes a lever. When it ignores it, the redesign can become a very handsome step backward.
