The llms.txt file is an emerging convention that exposes, at the root of a site, a machine-readable summary for LLMs and agents.
It can point to important pages, policies, context resources, machine files, priority areas and interpretation boundaries.
What llms.txt can do
A good llms.txt file can help a system:
- identify canonical pages to read;
- avoid wasting time on secondary resources;
- understand the site’s overall architecture;
- find AI policies, governance files and proof surfaces;
- connect human-facing pages to machine-readable surfaces.
What llms.txt cannot do
llms.txt does not fix an incoherent site.
It does not repair an ambiguous offer, an incomplete accessibility tree, a fragile form, missing proof or weak content architecture. It also does not automatically turn a website into a recommendable source.
It is an orientation surface, not an interpretation guarantee.
Role in agentic readiness
In an agentic readiness strategy, llms.txt is useful when it is aligned with the rest of the site: HTML, sitemap, structured data, internal links, policies, pillar pages, proof and machine files.
The risk is selling llms.txt as a magic solution. The better approach is to integrate it into coherent AI governance and machine readability, then verify whether real journeys remain readable and actionable.
