Interpretive smoothing refers to the tendency of AI systems to pull your positioning toward the average of your sector. Where your offer presents edges, distinctive angles, unusual phrasings, the system rounds them off. It produces a description that resembles any comparable actor, erasing precisely what justifies your existence in the market.
How smoothing occurs
Language models are trained on massive corpora where sector descriptions naturally converge. A consultancy “helps companies transform.” A digital agency “supports its clients in their digital strategy.” These phrases are statistically dominant. They form the norm toward which the model pulls every description.
When you assert something different, the system must choose between your specific phrasing and the sector pattern it knows. If your signals are not strong and explicit enough, the pattern wins. Your positioning is smoothed.
The concrete result:
- your unique methodological approach is described in generic terms;
- your competitive distinctions are absorbed into the sector category;

How to resist smoothing
Resisting interpretive smoothing requires providing systems with signals that cannot be normalized without obvious loss of information. This involves two complementary axes: a semantic content architecture that structures your distinctions formally, and brand disambiguation and stabilization work that anchors your entities with enough precision that the system cannot reduce them to a generic category.
The goal is to create an interpretive surface where your distinctive edges are structured data, not merely editorial intentions.
